What you should know about Emergency Lighting | Quantum Electrical Services (WA)

It's a necessity for building compliance, yet it is often overlooked time and time again.

Did you know that there is an Australian Standard for Emergency Lighting for Inspection and Maintenance? AS/NZS 2293.2:1995 for those playing at home. Whilst these standards are in place we often see them getting overlooked. It is an all to common theme across Perth with commercial buildings failing to keep up with Emergency Lighting maintenance and in some more serious cases- no emergency lighting system whatsoever.

Obviously this ongoing inspection/maintenance process comes at a cost, but as with anything in the maintenance world, staying on top of this process will help over time rather than finding large numbers of failing fittings which can become quite an expense.

Emergency Lighting must be inspected and tested at least once every 6 months. The test is to ensure that the battery inside the fitting will hold the light on when power is lost (in an emergency situation). The battery must hold for 90 minutes or else they do not comply. As with many building across Perth we are starting to notice fittings once installed during the initial build are now of age and are failing this simple test.

Along with the emergency lighting system should also be an "Emergency Lighting Log Book." I am sure some are cringing at the thought of this, but it is as equally important as the system itself and goes hand in hand to enable the technicians to document there diagnosis and also provides much required proof that you are adhering to this essential safety requirement.

No matter the building, emergency lighting is the essence of any safety system and needs to be maintained. There are many buildings which lack this basic requirement.
